Vážení příznivci mých nedodělaných cestovních stránek. Nerad bych sliboval, ale možná se zde dozvíte něco málo o mém putování za velkou louží. Odlet jsem naplánoval na 2.4.2009 a přílet po Velikonocích 14.4.2009. V tomto rozmezí zde budu přidávat nové zážitky a fotky, tak se snad máte na co těšit. I já se těším na zážitky z měst New York, Washington, Lexington, Cincinnati, Dayton, Defiance, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Niagarské vodopády, ... . Váš Alešek

Dear viewers of my not finished travelog pages. I do not want to promise something that I cannot fulfill, but perhaps you will learn here a little about my trip across the Big Puddle. My departure was planned on 2.4.2009 and the return after Easter on 14.4.2009. In those days I hope to accumulate here my new experiences and photos, so, maybe you have something to look forward to. I am too looking forward to seeing New York, Washington, Lexington, Cincinnati, Dayton, Defiance, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Niagara Falls..... Yours Alešek

Trochu s obavou, co jsem doma zapomněl se vydávám na cestu za velkou louži.

A bit worried about what I might have forgotten at home I set out.

V Amsterodamu nás potkala první krize, když nakládali do letadla zavazadla, praskla hadice od hydrauliky a gejzír oleje pocákal letadlo a vylil se na letištní plochu. Nejprve přišli "Pat a Mat" a kroutili nad rozlitým mlékem hlavou, po podání rukou přišlo dalších pět podobných a dohodli se, že zavolají šéfa, ten nevěřícně kroutil hlavou a nechal přijet hasiče. Protože přijeli ve třech autech tři hasiči, nebylo kam uhnout nakladač, takže jej museli rozebrat, aby projelo pod letadlem. Následovala záchranná akce a přistavení nového nakladače.

In Amsterodam there was the first snag, When the luggage was loaded into the airplane, a hose from hydraulics burst and a geyser of oil smeared the aircraft and the concrete area below it. The first to arrive were "Pat and Mat", they rolled their eyes in disbelief over the spilt milk. After a while other five colleagues appeared on the scene and they decided to call their boss. He also rolled his eyes and then he called for the firemen. Three firemen arrived in tree cars and therefore there was no place to move the loader to. They had to dismantle the loader to move it out of the way. The cleaning action followed and then a new loader arrived.

Zpoždění 2 hodiny jsme skoro dohnali. Ale nad New Yorkem nebylo ideální počasí, tak nás odklonili a asi hodinu jsme létali všude možně kolem. To jsme viděli z letadla sochu Svobody, most, a další krásy New York. Když přišla bouřka, pustili nás na přistání. Pilot dostal jedničku, protože s námi spadnul jako v bavlnce.

The two hours delay was almost erased during the flight across the Atlantic. But the weather conditions in New York were not good, so we were circling for about an hour or so. So we could see the Statue of Liberty, a bridge and other sights in New York. We were allowed to land just when a storm started. The pilot should be rewarded with a medal, it was a very soft landing.

Ve frontě na imigračním jsme prostáli také hodinku, ale protože před námi nevpustili nějakou Italku, tak jsme měli pohodové propuštění. Nic nechtěli vědět, jen jaký business jedeme dělat, a protože jim geodetické vybavení nic neříkalo, bouchli potřebná razítka a šli jsme.

Then we had to stand in a line at the Immigration Office for an hour, but perhaps since right in front of us an Italian woman was refused to enter, we were allowed without any problem. They only asked us about the purpose of our visit and because they did not know anything about surveying business, they banged their rubber stamps where needed and let us in.

Na informacích jsme dostali mapku, kde najdeme půjčovnu a tentokrát jsme po chvilce administrativy odjeli zbrusu novým Fordem, který měl na tachometru 5 mil. Smrděl novotou a když jsem se zeptal servismena, kde se vypíná vnitřní světlo, odpověděl, že netuší.

At the Information Office we got a map with where to find „Hire a Car“ and after some paperwork we left in a brand new Ford with only 5 miles on its oddometer. Its newness smelled and when I asked the serviceman where to switch off the inner light, he answered he had no idea.

Vyrazili jsme do New Yorku v sedm hodin. Protože byl pátek a navigace nás vedla nejkratší cestou, vystáli jsme asi na 1000 semaforech červenou. To jsem fakt nezažil, abych po hodině jízdy byl zhruba 20 km, bolela mě noha od mačkání brzdy (u automatiky se nic jiného dělat nemusí) a vyhlídky mizerné. Zhruba v devět jsme se dostali na most přes zátoku, kde se platí 10 USD za přejezd.

At seven o’clock we set out for New York. As it was Friday and the navigation chose the shortest route we had to stop at about 1000 traffic lights when the light was red. I have never experienced anything like that before, after about one hour drive and 20 km distance my foot was aching as I always had to step on the brake (with an automatic gearbox you do not have to do anything else) and our prospects were bleak. At about 9 we managed to reach the bridge over the inlet where we had to pay 10 USD toll.

Dál už to šlo v pohodě, najeli jsme na dálnici a frčeli do Philadelphie. Cestou jsme se zastavili na večeři v rychlo-baru (nic jiné jsme nepotkali) Do hotelu jsme dojeli kolem jedenácté a cestou jsem už myslel, že usnu. Spali jsme hned po 26 hodinách na cestě z Pardubic.

Then it was easy, we got onto the highway and were whirring to Philadelphia. We stopped at fast food for dinner (nothing else was on the way). I was glad when we reached our hotel after eleven, as I was afraid to fall asleep behind the wheel. We could sleep after 26 hours of our journey from Pardubice.

Tak to je hotýlek, kde jsme spali. Byl velký vítr, takže jsme zabouchli dveře a jeli do Philadelphie.

This is the hotel in which we stayed overnight. It was a windy day, so we slammed the door and continued on our way to Philadelphia.

Ve Philadelphii jsem navštívil krámek s elektronikou a koupil jsme si kabel pro 110V. Příjemný prodavač mi ještě povyprávěl něco málo o navigacích a pak už jsme se věnovali procházce po městě.

In Philadelphia I found a store with electrical appliances where I bought a cable for 110V. A nice salesman told me something about navigation and then we went to see the sights.

Další město po cestě byl Baltimore. Kde mají horší cesty než u nás. Teda skoro všude je to dost mizerný.

Our next city was Baltimore. The roads there are much worse than in CR. Well, a lot of other things there are rather poor too.

V Baltimore jsme prošli centrum a došli si opět na oběd do rychlého občerstvení, protože restauraci jsme žádnou nepotkali.

In Baltimore we strolled through downtown area and had a lunch in fast food, as we could not find any restaurant.

Přesun do Washingtonu byl krátký a tak jsme měli celý podvečer a večer na potloukání se po Washington DC. Jen chvilku jsme se opřel o zeď u Capitalu a už se na mě policista díval přísným zrakem.

Transfer to Washington was short and so we had the whole evening to see Washington, DC. I just leant for a while on the wall of Capitol and a policeman cast a strict glance at me.

Opuštěný "White House". Pan Obama s manželkou jsou zrovna v Praze. No není to smůla. Spaní ve Washingtonu bylo opět dobré, protože jsme se do postele dostali až po desáté hodině.

The lonely "White House". Mr. Obama and his wife are just visiting Prague. What a piece of bad luck! The night at Washington was good again, because after 10 p.m. we were already in bed.

Něco jsem vyfotil i pro geodety, to je hlavní bod Virginia, jak polohový, tak výškový. Jen pro upřesnění to už je další den na cestě a sice v městě Ritchmond.

Now a picture for land surveyors. This is the main benchmark in Virginia, both horizontal and vertical. We are on the way again the following day and in the town called Richmond.

Už tradičně jsme se najedli v občerstvení na ulici, ale tentokrát to bylo v neděli u mše, která se konala na basebalovém hřišti a v přilehlém výstavišti.

Again we had a snack in the street, this time it was Sunday and there was a mass held on the baseball field and the nearby exhibition area.

Dalších 500 mil se téměř nic nedělo, jen naše připravená tabulka na přepočet F na C (Fahrenheit na Celsius) nám nestačila, protože cestou již bylo 85 F a to je více než 27 C.

The following 500 miles almost nothing happened, only our temperature conversion table between F and C degrees (Fahrenheit and Celsius) was no good as it was more than 85 F which exceeds 27 C.

To bylo v Dawsonu, tam v salonu a já na život nadával ... A první dva motorkáři pro Evu.

This was in Dawson, in the saloon, where I was cursing life… And I also also noticed the first two motorcyclists, a picture for Eva.

Dalším trochu zajímavým městem byl Charleston, kde se dalo na každém rohu tančit, ale my jsme jeli dál.

Another interesting town was Charleston, where you can dance at every corner, but we continued on our way.

Vysněný Lexington a naše město na další čtyři dny. Asi pět větších domů, jinak velká vesnice.

Lexington, the city of our dreams, where we were to spend our next four days. About five big houses, the rest looks like a large village.

Právě když jsme dorazili na hotel začala bouřka, která přešla do tornáda. Byli jsme rádi, že máme cestování (1000 mil) za s sebou.

Just as we arrived to the hotel, a storm started, and it soon turned to tornado. We were glad to have finished our travel (about 1000 miles) on that day.

Dva dny školení v různých sekcích, méně či více zajímavá témata. Ráno od 8:00 do večera 20.00. Trochu to přehnali.

Two days training in various sections, the topics more or less interesting. From the morning 8:00 till the evening 20.00! A bit too much for me.

Nový software na řízení stavebních strojů.

Těsně před večeří začalo sněžit, snad se budeme moci vrátit domů a nezapadneme. Asi máme letní gumy, tak to nebude nic moc.

It started to snow just before the dinner, let’s hope we do not get stuck in a snow drift on our way back to hotel. We might have summer tires, so the return journey will not be too pleasant.

Nekonečná večeře, kdy během jídla hovořili dva prezidenti, kteří se velice rádi poslouchají a chválí jejich firmy a zaměstnance.

The endless dinner during which two presidents were orating, They seemed to enjoy hearing themselves and praising their companies and employees.

Proklatě dlouhý třetí den v Lexingtonu. Snad už zítra odjedeme za dobrodružstvím.

A terribly long third day in Lexington, KY. Perhaps tomorrow we are leaving for some adventure.

Sice to neutíká, ale konečně nám nepřednáší chlap, ale těhotná programátorka, které jsem se však neodvážil zeptat jestli náhodou není těhotná. Už s tím máme špatné zkušenosti!

The lectures are boring, but at least this time our lecturer is not a male, but a pregnant woman-programmer. But I did not ask her about when her baby is due to be born. You never know…

Good-bye Lexington conference center!

Odpolední projížďka skrz Ohio nás zavedla do Cincinnati a Daytonu.

The afternoon ride through Ohio leads us to Cincinnati and Dayton.

Krajina připomíná Pardubicko. Placka ve velkém.

The countryside is similar to Pardubice area. A large pancake.

Zhruba za 3 hodiny jsme dorazili ke Smoldovi, kde jsme našli vzkaz, že je otevřeno, ať se chováme jako doma.

In about 3 hours time we reached Smolda’s place, where we found a note saying that the house was opened and we should feel like at home.

Za chvilku se však objevil Ráďa a šel nám ukázat město Defiance. První, kam jsme zavítali byla jeho škola, kde pracuje. Pak jsme prochodili všechny důležité místa ve městě (16 000 lidí velikost jako Pardubice).

But in a while Ráďa appeared and he took us to see the sights of Defiance town. The first place we visited was his school. We walked through all important place of the town ( which has only about 16 000 inhabitants, but is as large as Pardubice).

Večeře s Mexikánem i s Kate byla v Mexické restauraci, což bylo po dlouhé době trochu normální jídlo, ale bez piva. Na to jsme si zašli až pozdě večer do místní hospůdky, kde jsou specialitou smažené okurky (možná spíš močáky). Fakt dobrý.

The dinner with Mexikán and Kate was in a Mexican restaurant, it was our first proper food after a long time, but they did not serve beer there. We went for beer late in the evening to a local bar which also served fried pickled gherkins. Really good!

Ráno nás z domu vyprovázeli dva bafani, kteří obývají společně s Kate a Smoldou jejich domov.

In the morning two big dogs who share Smolda and Kate’s home were seeing us off.

Na cestě nás potkala nepříjemnost, když jsme najeli na objížďku, která vedla přes most do Kanady, kam jsme vůbec nechtěli. Takže jsme zaplatili mýtné 5 + 5 USD a ještě jsme si prošli imigračním do Kanady a zpět do USA. Naštěstí jim důvod, podívat se na NHL stačil a pustili nás tam i zpět. Jinak Detroit je město bez lidí. Jsou tu mrakodrapy a hřiště na basketball, baseball, americký fotbal, hokej, ale nic moc víc.

We had a trouble on our way, as a detour lead us to Canada, which we did not intend to visit at all! So we had to pay toll 5 + 5 USD and to go through Canadian and US immigration offices to Canada and back to the USA. The purpose of our stay to see a NHL match was OK for them, so they let us in and back. Detroit seems to be a city without any people. There are skyscrapers, basketball and ice-hockey arenas, baseball fields and that might be all!

Okružní jízda vláčkem začala také zajímavě, protože asi 10cm před nástupní stanicí se automatický vláček rozbil (bez řidiče). Takže se čekalo, než přišel řidič ze svačiny a pokusil se dostat do vagónu a popojet s ním do stanice. Jeli jsme dalším, který přijel zhruba za 3 minuty.

Riding through the city on an EL-train looked promising. But we had a bad luck when about 10 cm in front of the platform the train (without a driver) stopped. So we had to wait for a driver who interrupted his meal and tried to get into the train and move it a bit further. We had to use another train which arrived in about 3 minutes.

NHL je velký cirkus a nic moc hokej. Při vstupu všechny bedlivě kontrolují, ale potom už všichni zamíří ke stánkům s občerstvením a snad se předhánějí, kdo si objedná více pizzi, piva a podobně.

NHL is a big circus with ice-hockey that is not too impressive. Every spectator is thoroughly frisked at the entrance, but after that everybody heads for refreshment stalls where they compete in who orders more pizza, beer etc.

Red Wing hráli s Predators z Neshvilu. Ještě minutu před koncem to bylo 3:1, ale v poslední minutě si nechali dát domácí dva góly a šlo se do prodloužení. Nicméně skoro všechny góly byly z přesilovek, takže žádná pohledná akce. Nakonec se zdálo, že budou domácí spokojení, protože při samostatných nájezdech dal Hudler ve třetí sérii gól, jenomže následující hráči Neshvilu dali dva nájezdy a tak domácí prohráli.

Red Wing played against Predators from Nashville. A minute before the regular end local team was leading 3:1, but in the last minute Predators scored twice so the match got an extra time. All goals were scored in power plays, so there was no handsome action. Just before the end it looked as if local team might win when Hudler scored in third series of penalty shoot-out, but the next two attempts were successful only for Nashville, so the local team lost in the end.

Další důkaz, že tu nejde jen o hokej. Kluk požádal o ruku před 30 000 lidmi. Pak pozdravil všechny kapitán z Iráku a všichni byly nadšení. To vše během hry nebo u nás během komerční přestávky.

Another proof that hockey is not the main topic. A boy proposed to a girl in front of 30 000 witnesses. Then a captain from Iraq greeted the audience and everybody was enthusiastic. All that happened during the game.

Po projetí hranice s Kanadou, kde jsem se trochu zapletl do vyclení a málem jsem nechal celníka proclít naše půjčené auto, jsme dojeli k Huronskému jezeru. Koupat se nedalo, protože bylo těsně nad nulou, foukal silný vítr, a tak jsme jen sebrali pár mušlí a mazali do auta.

When I crossed the Canadian border I lost my way and had almost our rented car declared at the customs office. Later we reached Lake Huron. Well, I did not try to swim in it, as the temperature was slightly above zero Celsius and a strong wind was blowing. So we just picked a couple of shells and hurried back to our car.

Mé srdce pláče. Nith River, moje tajné přání se nesplnilo. Skoro vše bylo proti splutí této krásné Kanadské řeky. Teplota vzduchu 8C, teplota vody 3C, vodní stav místo 10 kubíků více než 30 kubíků a ke všemu zavřená půjčovna. Do krásného městečka Paris, kde jsme se nejenom dobře najedli, ale kde se vlévá Nith River do Grand River, se ještě někdy vrátím.

My heart is bleeding! The Nith River, my secret wish for white-water kayaking, did not materialize. The air temperature is 8C, water temperature 3C, flow rate is 30 cubic meters per second (instead of 10 cubic meters which is the safety limit) and on top of that the kayak rent office was closed! I certainly hope to visit the beautiful town of Paris, where we also had a good meal, and where the River Nith merges with the Grand River, again in future!

Protože, jsme měli volné odpoledne, vzali jsme to trochu severněji a zastavili jsme se na dvě hodinky v Torontu. Konečně krásné město, přesně, jak jsem si velkoměsto představoval. Opravdu nejkrásnější město, které jsme zatím navštívili.

As we had a free afternoon we moved a bit northward and stopped for two hours in Toronto. At last, a magnificent city just according to my imagination! Really, the most beautiful city we have visited so far.

Tento pohled není z vrtulníku, ale z Torontské chlouby CN Tower. Věže, která je vysoká 570m. Takže je skoro dvakrát tak vysoká, než okolní mrakodrapy.

This is not a view from a helicopter, this is from the top of Toronto pride, the CN Tower. It is 570m tall. Almost twice as tall as all the skyscrapers in its vicinity.

Málo známá zajímavost Niagarské oblasti jsou zdymadla. Systém sedmi zdymadel dokáže proplavit obrovské lodě mezi jezerem Ontario a Erie. My jsme tam vydrželi skoro hodinku.

Less known sight in Niagara area are the locks. Seven locks can let huge ships sail between Lake Ontario and Erie. They captivated us for almost an hour.

A tak vypadá Niagára po ránu, kdy ještě nejsou davy návštěvníků všude.

And this is how Niagara Falls look early in the morning when there are no hordes of visitors yet.

Pohled na hrdlo vodopádu nám zkazil business, který se kolem Niagarských vodopádů nabalil. Kasina, houpačky, atrakce snad všeho co si umíte i neumíte představit.

The view into the throat of Niagara Falls was almost destroyed by business which was attracted to this area: casinos, fun-fairs, you name it.

At last, the crazy late evening New York!

Brzo ráno jsem odevzdal auto, s kterým jsme objeli skoro 4000km.

Early in the morning I returned the rented car on which we wound up almost 4000 km.

V New Yorku jsme navštívili nejvýznamnější pamětihodnosti. Z výčtu sochu Svobody, Wall street, Empire State Building, Central park, Grand Zero, ....

In New York we visited the major sights, like the Statue of Liberty, Wall street, Empire State Building, Central Park, Ground Zero, ....

U burzy na Wall street bych mohl zhodnotit tuto cestu. Asi by se dalo říci "bublina splaskla". Je tím myšleno, že všechno v Americe je nafouknuté, ale není to moc jiné než u nás. Města jsou velká, ale uprostřed vybydlená. Jídla mají hodně, ale normální oběd hamburger s brambůrkama mě nenadchl. Silnic mají víc, ale jsou v podobném až horším stavu jako u nás. Řidiči jezdí pomalu, ale někdy vytvoří jedno auto neuvěřitelnou frontu a snad nikdy mě na dálnici nepředjelo tolik kamionů jako v Americe. Na sport se většinou jen jedou podívat autem do obrovských stadiónů, kde nakupují opět hamburgery a o sport tam nakonec moc nejde. Pracují do roztrhání těla a věří, že je to spasí. Věří, že jejich vláda a armáda může pomoci celému světu a svět jim musí být vděčný. Ale abych jen nekritizoval. Z Lexingtonu jsem si odvezl spoustu zajímavých postřehů a myšlenek. Kanada je pěkná a tam se snad ještě někdy podívám.

Perhaps, by the Wall Street Exchange I could evaluate this journey. Can I say „The bubble burst?“ I mean that everything in America is inflated, but not much different from what we can see in Czech Republic. The towns are big but their centers are without inhabitants. They have a lot of food, but I did not like hamburger with French fries very much. They have a lot of roads, but they are similar to ours, some of them are even worse. Drivers go slowly, but sometimes just one slow car creates unbelieavably long line of vehicles behind. And I have been never overtaken by so many trucks as in America. As far as sport is concerned, Americans usually go by car to huge arenas just to buy hamburgers and the game is not so important for them. They work very hard and hope to be redeemed by that. They believe that their government and army can help all the Word and that the Word should be grateful for that. But, I should not only criticize: I have brought a lot of interesting ideas from Lexington. And Canada is a beautiful country and I hope to visit it again in future.

Tak končí naše komédie, zlo prohrává a dobro žije ... Zdravím vás z Empire State Building.
PS: Cesta domů nám trvala 30 hodin, tak to byl teprve konec naší tragédie.

So here ends our comedy, the evil has lost and the good survives… I greet you from the Empire State Building.
PS: The journey back took us 30 hours, which was the end of our tragedy.
